ClwydAlyn has secured £100,000 in government funding to improve heating efficiency at an independent living scheme for older residents in Flintshire.
The north Wales social landlord has received support through the Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES) to upgrade the heat network at Llys Eleanor in Shotton, a purpose-built scheme for over-60s residents.
The funding forms part of more than £8m awarded in Round 9 of HNES to improve underperforming heat networks across England and Wales. In total, 8,200 residents are expected to benefit from more reliable, cost-effective and energy-efficient heating systems as a result of the latest funding round.
ClwydAlyn, which provides social homes across north Wales, has match-funded the £100,000 capital grant, doubling the investment available for improvements at Llys Eleanor. The scheme’s heat network previously received support in Round 6 of HNES, which funded an optimisation study to identify areas for improvement.
Capital works at the Shotton scheme will now include the installation of heat meters, network cleaning and the fitting of Heat Interface Units in individual homes. These upgrades are intended to improve system performance, reduce energy consumption and give residents greater control over their heating.
Tom Boome, head of technical innovation and climate services at ClwydAlyn, said: “The HNES funding has been pivotal in allowing us to make targeted upgrades to our heat network at Llys Eleanor, including optimisation of the system.
“The HNES funded optimisation study has provided significant learning around the improvements we can make, not only at Llys Eleanor, but also to our 15 other heat networks in ClwydAlyn residential schemes across North Wales.
“These upgrades are improving efficiency, reducing energy consumption and helping our residents to better manage their heat usage.”
Around half a million people across the UK are currently connected to one of approximately 12,000 heat networks. HNES targets inefficient infrastructure to help deliver warmer homes, lower running costs and more future-proofed heating systems.
Louise Singleton, HNES programme manager, said: “We’re delighted to mark yet another milestone with the publication of our round 9 funding recipients.
“Once again, thousands more residents will benefit from a more reliable central heating system thanks to HNES support, while homes and buildings across England and Wales become more energy efficient and carbon friendly.”
The funding is part of wider efforts to improve energy efficiency in social housing and reduce carbon emissions from communal heating systems.
