Stonewater has joined a select list of social housing providers invited to tender for “affordable” housing developments in Southampton.
The city council’s Affordable Housing Framework is one of the tools it is using to increase the supply of “affordable” homes by 8,000 by 2040; ultimately reducing the wait for people on its housing waiting list.
Councillor Lorna Fielker, Southampton‘s deputy leader and cabinet member for adults, health and housing, said: “We want our residents to live in safe and healthy homes, which is why it is so important that we deliver good quality, affordable housing, to ensure our residents can live comfortably and independently for longer.
“I look forward to working in partnership with the Affordable Housing Providers to step up the delivery of more affordable housing in Southampton which in turn will improve the health and wellbeing of our residents.”
Marie Riordan, Stonewater’s director of development for south and central, said the selection process was “rightly rigorous”.
“The need for high-quality affordable homes has never been greater,” she added. “Many of the sites that the council is looking to develop are brownfield, so the framework will not only be delivering much-needed homes for local people, but it will also regenerate disused areas, and breathe new life back into communities.
