Manchester City Council has granted planning permission for Your Housing Group to build 216 new homes on the site of a former warehouse in Openshaw, Greater Manchester.
The 216 homes will bring more affordable rental accommodation to Greater Manchester, along with a range of affordable home-ownership options, with 72 for sale through shared ownership, 72 for private rent and 72 for affordable rent.
The development, which will be known as Edgefield Green, will comprise a series of one- and two-bedroom apartments and two-, three- and four-bed houses.
The homes will be a mix of terrace, semi-detached, and detached properties, complete with gardens and landscaped green spaces.
Richard Jones, director of Growth for Your Housing Group, said: “It is fantastic to reach this significant point for Edgefield Green.
“Thanks to the support of Manchester City Council, these plans will allow us to transform the site of a disused warehouse into a wonderful, vibrant community in Openshaw, which has excellent links to Manchester and is located close to parks and schools.
“This development is yet another significant step forward in delivering our ambitious plans to build quality new housing across the region, to help improve access to affordable housing with various tenure options.”
The land on Edge Lane was purchased in 2019.
Remediation work is underway, and Your Housing Group is in the process of appointing a contractor, with building work is due to start on site in early 2021.
Cllr Suzanne Richards, Manchester City Council’s executive member for Housing and Regeneration, said: “The demand for safe and secure housing remains high in Manchester, and working in partnership with housing providers that are committed to developing quality homes is one of the ways we can ensure we can meet that demand.
“Projects like this also bring back into use long-term disused plots of land, improving the area for the wider community, and attract new residents to the neighbourhood.”
The development has been funded through Your Housing Group’s strategic partnership with Homes England.
Your Housing Group was announced as one of the agency’s strategic partners in January 2019, receiving £87.5m of funding in line with the government’s aspiration to provide 40,000 affordable new homes across the country.
