Home Group has agreed a deal with a major energy provider that will see it use renewable electricity throughout its corporate offices.
The housing association, which has offices across England and Scotland, will convert around 2,500 meters from brown energy to green energy, thanks to the deal with SSE.
Home Group will be providing green energy in communal spaces in its supported services, as well as to its headquarters in Newcastle and other UK offices.
The deal supports Home Group’s wider plan to significantly reduce its carbon footprint and is in line with its long-term roadmap to help government reach its 2050 net-zero target, as well as new commitments made this week to cut carbon emissions by 78% by 2035.
Nusheen Hussain, executive director of Business Development at Home Group, who is leading its sustainability agenda, said: “This deal reaffirms, once again, our desire and commitment to becoming more sustainable.
“We recognise we have quite a journey ahead to achieve our aims, but we have absolute clarity about what we need to do on that journey.
“With deals like this with SSE, and a range of other deals and projects active or in the pipeline, we are confident that when we reach the end of that journey the benefits for us as an organisation, our customers, partners, and wider society will be great.”
Last week, Home Group and four other major UK housing associations, formed a landmark partnership to tackle energy efficiency and decarbonisation across their combined 300,000 homes.
Abri, Anchor Hanover, Home Group, Hyde Group and Sanctuary Group, which count more than 600,000 customers between them, have together formed the ‘Greener Futures Partnership’ (GFP).
Over time, the organisations – whose joint turnover exceeds £2.3bn – intend to collaborate on procurement, building skills, and expertise and create solutions for developing more affordable and sustainable homes while lowering emissions in existing homes.
Home Group provides housing, health, and care to over 115,000 customers in 55,000 properties.
