Housing association Citizen has appointed house builder and regeneration specialist The Hill Group as its delivery partner in the regeneration of Spon End in Coventry.
The regeneration project aims to breathe new life into the neighbourhood, located West of Coventry city centre, by creating a safer place to live with around 750 brand new, energy-efficient homes.
According to Citizen, a minimum of 30% will be “affordable homes”. The regeneration will also feature major improvements to the public realm and open green space, including the River Sherbourne that runs through the area.
Hill will also oversee the demolition of many of the area’s blocks of flats that were built in the 1960s.
Kevin Roach, director of regeneration services at Citizen, said: “We’re pleased to announce The Hill Group as the developer partner for Spon End. Hill has been chosen because of their vast experience in the sector for building homes, particularly high-rise buildings, that are of a high quality but more importantly because of their strong reputation of working with communities to successfully regenerate and transform the area.
“The regeneration of Spon End is a major project for us, and it will improve the area of Spon End for our customers. We have consulted with our customers throughout the process, and they have told us what is important to them. This is why we have prioritised making the improvements to the green spaces and making the River Sherbourne accessible for the local community at the very heart of our proposals to transform the area.
“At Citizen we want to build homes and an environment that meet the needs of our region, and this includes demolishing homes that are no longer fit for purpose. We will also build properties that are warmer, more comfortable and meet our customers’ needs. We’re looking forward to working with Hill throughout our regeneration of Spon End.”
Andy Fancy, Hill’s regional managing director, added: “We’re delighted to be appointed to deliver the homes at Spon End. The Hill Group prides itself on high-quality, energy-efficient homes and best-in-class regeneration with a true focus on people and communities. We’re looking forward to working with Citizen and residents to create much-needed new homes where people will love to live for generations to come.”
Citizen will submit a planning application to Coventry City Council later this summer. If the plans are approved, Hill will begin the demolition of Kerry House, Milestone House, and Trafalgar House in Autumn 2024, with building work on the first phase due to begin in Spring 2025.
