Three Salford community projects, from gang prevention to disability sport, are vying for a £1,000 prize in Salix Homes’ Springboard Heroes Awards.
The housing association has shortlisted three groups that have previously received money from its Springboard Community Fund. The public can vote for the winner.
The finalists are Prevent 2 Protect, A Little Extra, and DOSportUK.
Prevent 2 Protect is a Salford-based charity that works to protect children and young people from gang involvement, knife crime, and County Lines exploitation. Its GANG for LIFE project combines sports activities with educational workshops in schools in Salford and beyond.
A Little Extra is Salford’s only support group for families raising children with Down Syndrome. It meets every Saturday at the Broughton Hub, giving children a place to play and make friends, and parents and carers a support network.
DOSportUK runs inclusive sporting activities for people with disabilities, including Salford Knights basketball sessions at Eccles College.
The Springboard Fund provides grants to local initiatives that bring communities together, improve health and wellbeing, tackle isolation, and create opportunities. It awarded £33,000 to local projects last year.
Gemma Parlby, executive director of customer and landlord services at Salix Homes, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the difference our Springboard Community Fund is making across Salford, supporting local groups and projects that are working at the heart of our communities.
“This year’s finalists show just how varied and valuable that work is. Whether it’s helping protect young people from crime and exploitation, supporting families who might otherwise feel isolated, or ensuring everyone has the opportunity to enjoy sport, these are projects that are changing lives for the better.”
Voting is open on the Salix Homes website and closes on Wednesday 2 December. The winner will be announced soon afterwards on the housing association’s Facebook page.
