Residents at The Guinness Partnership’s Friendship House, an independent living scheme in Southsea, Portsmouth, recently held a fun-filled party to celebrate Chinese New Year.
Joining more than one billion people worldwide, the residents came together with their relatives and staff to celebrate the year of the Dragon – enjoying music and delicious sweet and savoury food.
There were also traditional Chinese decorations, including red lanterns and decorative Chinese door couplets.
However, the highlight of the party was an appearance by dancers from the Portsmouth Chinese Association, who entertained everyone with their graceful dancing.
To help pay for the party food, supermarket vouchers were kindly gifted by Bellmac, one of Guinness’s contractors – who completed work at the scheme last year.
Nicky Hope, Independent Living Adviser at The Guinness Partnership said: “It was such a fantastic day and a great way to celebrate Chinese New Year – our residents really enjoyed the food, music and dancing.
“I would like to thank everyone involved who helped make the day such a success.”

A Friendship House resident said: “Just to say thank you for the lovely afternoon we had for the Chinese New Year. It was well organised.
“Thank you to the contractor for the food also to the Chinese Association for the dancers. We all enjoyed it. Thank You.”
Every year Chinese New Year is marked by an animal in the Chinese Zodiac and 2024 is the Year of the Dragon. The 12 animals are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.
