Southern Housing has unveiled a long-term capital investment programme worth up to £2.38bn to improve residents’ homes over the next two decades.
The housing association said it has appointed six delivery partners following an 18-month consultation and procurement process, marking one of the largest improvement programmes in the social housing sector.
The works will include new kitchens and bathrooms, replacement roofing, windows and front doors, alongside fire safety upgrades and energy-efficiency measures.
Residents were involved in shaping the programme, the organisation says, with representatives sitting on the landlord’s procurement panel and helping to design contract documentation and review proposed suppliers.
Southern Housing said residents will continue to provide feedback as the programme progresses, with the aim of improving how works are delivered.
The six appointed contractors – Highview Group, Axis Europe, Chas Berger, Amber Construction, Hugh LS McConnell and Architectural Decorators Limited – will deliver the programme across London, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and Kent.
The procurement is among the first undertaken under the new Procurement Act, according to the association.
Mij Rahman, director of capital investment at Southern Housing, said the organisation reinvests surplus funds into services and asset improvements, and that the programme represents “a major step forward in strengthening the long-term quality and safety of our homes”.
He added that resident insight has been placed “at the heart of every decision”.
Beyond physical upgrades, the programme is expected to deliver wider social value. Contractors have committed to creating jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities, as well as supporting community projects and local charities.
