Work has started on a new 35-home development on the site of a former school in Dunston, Gateshead.
The £6m scheme on Ellison Road in Dunston, which is being developed by The Riverside Group, will a mix of two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes with a range of tenures, including affordable rent.
Riverside is working on the development in partnership with local contractor Meldrums and JDDK Architects.
Planning permission was granted by the local authority in September, and the development has a planned completion date of June 2024.
Riverside is delivering the homes as part of its £80.7m Strategic Partnership with Homes England.
Julie Gray, Riverside’s head of Development, said: “We’re really excited to be starting work on this new-build development, which is part of our ongoing commitment to transform lives and revitalise neighbourhoods.
“The new homes will be built to a very high standard and will be energy efficient, helping to keep energy bills down for our customers.
“Our investment in affordable homes in the area gives local people a choice of tenures and is part of Riverside’s wider £13m commitment in Gateshead to provide over 70 new affordable homes.”
Councillor John Adams, cabinet member for Housing at Gateshead Council, added: “The site on which new homes are being built has been vacant for a long time, and it’s really exciting to see work begin on its development, rejuvenating the area around it.
“Now more than ever, there is a need for more quality affordable family housing in the area, and with the mix of tenures available, I have no doubt they will have broad appeal.
“I wish The Riverside Group every success with this development, and it is very reassuring to see them working with local contractors, bringing valuable new jobs to our local communities.”
